How do you recognize that your marriage or long-term relationship is approaching a crisis?

Many couples lament during a crisis, usually with a “how did we get here?”

Recognizing potential red flags in a marriage or long-term relationship can help you to address issues before they escalate into a crisis.

Here are some common signs that your relationship is heading for a crisis, and you need to do something now:

  1. Poor Communication: Frequent misunderstandings, avoidance of difficult conversations, or a lack of open and honest dialogue can indicate there are deeper issues in your relationship.

  2. Constant Criticism: Persistent negative feedback, blame, or contempt towards each other will erode the foundation of respect and love in your relationship.

  3. Emotional Distance: A growing sense of emotional disconnection, reduced intimacy, or feeling more like roommates than partners is a serious concern that you should not ignore.

  4. Frequent Arguments: Regular, unresolved conflicts and arguments, especially about the same issues, signifies that there are deeper underlying problems.

  5. Infidelity: Cheating, whether emotional, physical or financial infidelity, can severely damage trust and commitment in your relationship.

  6. Lack of Intimacy: A significant decline in physical affection or sexual intimacy can indicate problems in the emotional or physical connection between you both, unless there are health issues or other issues that account for this.

  7. Financial Issues: Constant disagreements about money, secretive financial behavior, or financial stress will set up your relationship for a crisis.

  8. Avoidance: One or both partners avoid spending time together, opting to be with friends, family, or alone instead of with each other.

  9. Addictions or Abuse: Substance abuse, gambling, or any form of abuse (emotional, physical, or verbal) will set up your relationship for a crisis.

  10. Lack of Support: Feeling unsupported, unappreciated, or taken for granted by your partner can create resentment and disconnect.

  11. Different Life Goals: Significant changes in life goals, values, or priorities that are not addressed or reconciled can lead to growing apart.

  12. Ignoring Problems: Avoiding addressing issues or pretending everything is fine by one of you can lead to unresolved resentment and larger conflicts down the road.

Arts Outlet – Summer Program by The Family Advocates Canada

Arts Outlet is a vibrant, weekly summer experience designed to awaken creativity and nurture self-expression in children entering Grades 1 through 6 (Fall 2026). Hosted at The Family Haven @ Kipling Square – Annex, Suite 180, 611 10th Ave, Calgary, this program invites children into a safe, joyful, and imaginative space where their ideas, voices, and creativity can flourish.

Throughout the week, participants will explore a wide variety of expressive arts. From drawing and painting to collage storytelling, poetry circles, clay-making, and body-and-mind movement, each day is thoughtfully curated to spark curiosity and build confidence. Children will not only create but also connect with themselves, their peers, and with creativity. Intentional game times from Monday to Thursday add fun, movement, and opportunities for teamwork and social bonding.

Fridays offer a special experience: Library Day, where children will visit the inspiring and artistic environment of the Calgary Central Library, an exploration of creativity beyond the classroom walls.

Please note: All activities are subject to change.
